The implementation of the Real Plan in July 1994 triggered a major process of structural changes in the Brazilian financial system. Years of high inflation had created the incentives for an overbranched banking system in order to benefit from the accumulation of relatively lowinterest rate deposits. With currency stabilisation, hyperinflation ended and Brazilian banks were forced to retrench, find new sources of financing and redirect their activities.

O objetivo deste texto é fazer uma análise da crise e da reestruturação do sistema bancário brasileiro, após a implantação do Plano Real, em junho de 1994. Inicialmente, discute-se a natureza das crises bancárias, em geral, para depois analisar o impacto do Plano Real sobre o funcionamento e a estrutura do sistema bancário nacional. Em particular, procura-se analisar a situação e o papel dos três grandes bancos, o Econômico, o Nacional e o Bamerindus, na detonação da crise, bem como discutir as medidas do Banco Central para resolver a crise e fortalecer o sistema financeiro nacional.
